George Ntaios serves as Professor of Internal Medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and performs full clinical duties at the First Propedeutic Department of Internal Medicine at the AHEPA University Hospital. He was trained in Stroke Medicine in Switzerland and Austria.
He has held several leading roles in established Scientific Societies: currently, he serves as the Treasurer of the Stroke Council of the European Society of Cardiology since 2022. He also serves as the President of the Hellenic Stroke Organization since 2021, after a six-year term as its Secretary General. In addition, he served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the European Stroke Organization (2017-2020), and as the Chair of the Guidelines Committee of the European Stroke Organization (2014-2018).
The scientific and research focus of Prof. George Ntaios has been Stroke Medicine, and in particular stroke aetiology, secondary prevention and prognosis. He has always tried to bring together all related specialties like Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Neurology in a collaborative integrated team-spirit. In this context, his particular focus during the last decade has been Embolic Strokes of Undetermined Source (ESUS), which still stands as an uncharted territory overlapping all related medical disciplines. His research work on ESUS has deepened our understanding on the significance of the multiple cardiovascular comorbidities which are prevalent in these patients, for whom the optimal preventive strategies are still unclear.
He co-authored several Guideline Documents and Scientific Statements published by various scientific bodies like the European Society of Cardiology Council on Stroke, the European Heart Rhythm Association, the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the European Stroke Organization. His research has been published in a broad range of journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, European Heart Journal, Circulation, Journal of American College of Cardiology, Chest, JAMA Neurology, and Stroke.
