Serhat Unal

Dr. Serhat Ünal, who graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1981, received his specialist training in Internal Medicine between 1981 and 1985 and in Infectious Diseases in 1989-1990. He also received specialist training in Infectious Diseases at the Internal Medicine Department of New England Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical School in the United States between 1990 and 1992. He was appointed associate professor in 1989 and professor in 1995.

Between 1991 and 2013, Dr. Ünal worked as a faculty member at the Infectious Diseases Unit of the Department of Internal Medicine at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, and served as the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine from 2001 to 2013. In 2013, he was elected as the Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, a position he still holds.

Dr. Ünal served as the Dean of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine from 2006 to 2011. In 2018, he was appointed as the Director of the newly established Hacettepe University Vaccine Institute, and in 2022, he was appointed as the Vice Rector of Hacettepe University.

He is the founding president of the Turkish Hospital Infections Society, which was established in 2000. In addition, he was elected as the president of the Turkish Society of Internal Medicine Specialists in 2010. Since 2014, he has been a member of the board of the International Society of Chemotherapy. Dr. Serhat Ünal is a member of the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Association (KLIMIK), the International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID), the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
