Joost Wiersinga, MD, PhD, MBA, is Professor of Medicine and serves as chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases of Amsterdam UMC. He received his medical training at the University of Amsterdam with additional courses at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH, Bethesda, MD). He combines work in the clinic with education and research. At the Center for Experimental Molecular Medicine (CEMM) he focuses on the host response against severe bacterial infections, sepsis and pneumonia with a special in the development of novel immunetherapies. His work has been published in among others JAMA, BMJ, Lancet Microbe, Lancet Infect Dis and New England Journal of Medicine. For his work Wiersinga received the Andreas Bonn medallion, the ESCMID Young Investigator Award and the ANZICS Global Rising Star Award. Wiersinga chaired the Infection group of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines, is council member of the International Sepsis Forum (ISF) and immediate past chair of the ESCMID Study Group for Bloodstream Infections, Endocarditis and Sepsis (ESGBIES). He receives grants from the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw, Vidi-grant) and the European Union.
