Alexandra Kautzky-Willer is Professor of Gender Medicine, head of the Gender Medicine Unit and the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Medical University of Vienna. She has specialized in Internal Medicine, in Endocrinology and Metabolism, and in Geriatrics and Palliative Care. She is board member of numerous medical and scientific associations – amongst others, president of the Austrian Society of Gender-Specific Medicine – editorial board member of various journals and scientific consultant of national and international medical-scientific funds. In 1995, she received the Höchst Award and in 2004 the Joseph Hoet Research Award of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. In 2013, she was selected as one of the “Women Inspiring Europe” by the European Institute for Gender Equality. In 2016, she was awarded the Gabriele Possanner State Award for her scientific achievements in the field of gender-specific medicine. In 2016, she was the “look! Woman of the Year in the category Research”. In 2017, she was named “Scientist of the Year 2016” by the Austrian Club of Science and Education Journalists. In 2018, she received the Bartsch Award of the MINI MED event series and the Award of the City of Vienna in the category of Medicine. This was followed in 2019 by the CEE Innovation Award and in 2021 by the Women’s Award of the City of Vienna. In 2023 she received the Grete Rehor Award in the category “Education, science and world of work”. Alexandra Kautzky-Willer is author of more than 300 publications. Her research interests include women’s and men’s health, gestational diabetes, fetal programming, overweight, obesity, type 1 diabetes/autoimmunity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, beta cell function, inflammation, adipokines, endothelial dysfunction, and hormonal disorders – in general, and gender-specific aspects in particular.
